select languageSituated at 1,800 m above sea level, Turracher Höhe provides the perfect location for high-altitude training camps taking place for the first time in July and August 2011.
In July and August 2011, Isaac Kosgei, the Kärnten Läuft and Großglockner mountain run winner, Geoffrey Gikuni joined the camp at Turracher Höhe together with 8 other Kenyan athletes, taking advantage of the ideal altitude of 1,800 m.The special feature of the Kenyan running weeks is that Kenyan athletes take over the role of personal trainer, supervising the guests training sessions, giving helpful tips thus enhancing motivation. Participants are served authentic Kenyan food and have plenty of time for individual discussions and common leisure time programs. In 2012, the Kenyan running weeks at Turracher Höhe are planned in June, July and August.

Located on a high plateau at 1,763 m/5,784 ft altitude offering training routes up to the Kornock mountain summit at 2,205 m/7,234 ft, Turracher Höhe is perfectly suited for runners seeking performance enhancing high altitude training. The 2.4 km/1.5 miles long flat circular trail around Lake Turracher See (partly asphalt and gravel) is ideal for those who want to exercise easy runs and at the same time take advantage of the altitude and the inherent low oxygen content of the air. Athletes intending to include hilly terrain in their training program will find perfect, medium-difficult conditions on the 7.2 km/4.5 miles long 3-lakes tour on gravel and forest soil and can test their limits along an alpine long jog on the 11.2 km/6.9 miles Sigi Grabner training course (gravel and forest soil as well as forest paths).
Runners seeking training in the highest
pulse range and developing stamina will find perfect terrain at Turracher Höhe offering the additional beneficial bonus of having the option of returning down to the valley by cable car, a great way to ease the locomotor system: the choice is between 220 steep altitude meters (721 ft) to the Panoramabahn mountain station, 420 (1,378 ft), first steep and in the third part flatter altitude meters to the Kornockbahn mountain station as well as 420 constantly medium steep altitude meters also to the Kornockbahn mountain station. Then the runners take the cable car downhill, either the Panoramabahn or the Kornockbahn.
Runners who seek to improve their basic endurance with the help of long, quick altitude hikes with relatively little difference in altitude find perfect conditions at Turracher Höhe. The use of Nordic walking poles brings the added benefit of giving the upper body a soothing workout alternative. Recommendable routes include the “Weitental & Kaserseen“ tour featuring wide and gentle ascents and descents and a training time of approx. 4 to 4 ½ hours, the tour via Winkleralm and Schafalm to the Königsstuhl and back, taking approx. 7 hours and the similarly long tour leading over seven summits to the Eisenhut, the 2,441 m/8,008 ft high “roof“ of the Nockberge mountains and via Engeleriegel and Weitental back to Turracher Höhe.
The Kenyan running weeks and other high-altitude training camps at Turracher Höhe are organized in close cooperation with Carinthia’s biggest running event “Kärnten Läuft“ and the Kleinen Zeitung daily.
